Punisher Comics for Mature Readers Only? Are there any Punisher comics that are suggested for mature readers only? If so what are the names of them?
Also I really want to see both Punisher movies but heard that they were really bad. I have a reputation for enjoying movies that are failures but there are worse movies out there *cough*Dark Floors*cough* than the Punisher films. What makes these movies so bad (please don't give any spoilers)? Why did so many people hate them?
I only have a basic knowledge of The Punisher but he seems like a cool antihero and I would like to start reading Punisher comics and watching the movies. |
Check out Marvels MAX line Punisher by Garth Ennis. It was their adult line similar to DCs Vertigo. He dropped the (in my opinion, fun) absurdity of the Marvel Knights Punisher in favor of pure mean violence and sex.
For the best intro to Fank Castle read Ennis' "Born" (Marvel Max) or "Welcome Back Frank" (the trade paperback) by Ennis and Dillon.
The first movie actually starred Dolph Lundgren and Louis Gosset Jr in about 1990 and it was B-A-D bad. Bad like a carton of milk left out overnight.
The Thomas Jane Punisher in 2004(?) was actually not bad. War Zone I didn't watch. I heard it was as bad as it looked. |
What comics (series name or author) are appropriate for a 4 year old.? My son loves to sneak into my room and read my DMZ comics which are really mature. I want to find him something without sex and violence but maybe sans the guydie fluff. He is really smart and we are trying not shelter him or push religion on him. |
You might want to try the Marvel Adventure comics.
They are the comics that have "Marvel Adventure" at the top to distinguish them from regular Marvel comics, which can get a bit graphic,
Or you might want to try the Archie digests that you can find in grocery stores.
Also, most Marvel and DC comics from the 60's are pretty tame, so you could get some of those pretty easily in graphic novel and trade paperbacks.

What is a Mature Comic and Anime/Manga? I want both of these with strong sexual content. Atleast Nudity. Good Art and some kick *** battles if all possible. |
Batman: The Killing Joke
The Killing Joke, one of my favorite Batman stories ever, stirred a bit of controversy because the story involves the Joker brutally, pointlessly shooting Commissioner Gordon's daughter in the spine. This is a no-holds-barred take on a truly insane criminal mind, masterfully written by British comics writer Alan Moore.

What's The Most Mature Comic Book/Manga? I'm getting into Comics and I need a good novel that's gritty/mature...any suggestions? |
| all darkhorse comics in my opinion, 300 was a great movie, i assume is a great comic, sin city, too, an amazing movie, awesome comic |
What caused the shift to darker themes in comics during the 1980's onward? The modern age of comics began in 1986, and these included darker characters and more mature stories and themes. My question is, what caused this shift from the more innocent comics and heroes to the modern ones. Is it a specific change in culture, or changes which resulted in audiences favoring these types of comics? |
The shift began well before that but came to fruition in many ways during the eighties.
In the sixties you had the slow death of the comics code, which I would rant about if I wasn't so tired, and also the commercial success, in this pre-internet age, of the Undergrounds, which used the cheapness of reproduction technologies to produce creator owned and uncensored comic books which certainly involved graphic sex and drugs (Zap 4 had Mr Peanut mutate into Mr. P***s thanks to Victor Moscoso bur also touched on issues like Socialism and Biker Culture in Spain Rodriguez's Trashman of the Sixth International, gender identity in many of Vaughan Bode's late books and ecology in Slow Death and Last Gasp Ecofunnies, which gave Rich Corben his first exposure.
By the eighties the Industry had reestablished their hegenomy through pyrrhic victory ("Another such victory and we are finished," said Pyrrhus). But you still had this demand for adult and more thoughtful products. They had some old Underground people like Tom Veitch working for them, and they had British writers like Alan Moore, and finally they had this new generation of people like Frank Miller and Walter Simonson, believe it or not, who were early examples of talents influenced by Manga. Japan is a whole different culture than ours. I like to joke that I have no interest in self-proclaimed "Otaku" who don't know Hanae Mori or Commes des Garcons (two EXCELLENT Japanese Fashion houses. I'm really just being obnoxious, though). Japanese Pop culture has always been a little darker than American. Lone Wolf and Cub ends with Lone Wolf being killed by his enemy, who then submits to Cub killing him -- though Cub as a little boy in Medieval Japan stands no chance of growing up without parents or a home. That series was a HUGE influence on Frank Miller, who apparently helped find it a publisher as well as doing gorgeous covers for it. Simonson's interest in Mecha can be seen in his explosions, superhero costumes (look at his Paul Kirk Manhunter designs from the Brave and Bold series in the seventies with Archie Goodwin) and so forth.
In essence, the eighties -- well were a dark time for progressives which led to the disinvestment in the people of America so most opportunities have been paid as dividends to shareholders, and they were a triumph of monopoly capitaltists. And the big companies in the Industry had been through a period where they had felt threatened by these thoughtful but dark subversive comics like the ones I mentioned, and didn't want it to happen again. So they coopted the themes in an attempt to hold on to the older audience.
The modern age of comics didn't begin in 1986, believe me. |
What are some great comics that you can recommend? My favorite brand is DC comics with their stories about the Justice League characters. But if you have any other suggestions that are pretty great, I'd be willing to check those out too. BTW I'm 17 so I'm okay with reading mature content, as long as the plot line is good. |
| If you want Justice League stories Kingdom Come is pretty good, set in the future of the DC Universe tho. JLA: Tower of Babel is fairly good too, Batman has been keeping secret files on how to defeat members of the JLA in case he ever has to but it seems someone got those files and are taking down the members. Also as of newer comics I suggest DC Universe Online Legends, it's just coming out and is fairly good. As for Justice League members, All Star Superman is amazing, one of my fav Superman series. Batman Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, or Year One are all good. Green Lantern is pretty big now too so maybe Green Lantern: Secret Origin and Rebirth. I also recommend some other stories other than DC such as Y the Last Man, all men on earth die but for one, The Walking Dead, a great zombie story that even people who don't like zombies love. |
Where can I get some mature opinions on my comic? Where can I ask about my comic book?
If I ask here, people think Im promoting it, or just dont know what they're talking about ;) |
| Just post it and disregard the immature comments, that is the best you can hope for! Depending on the type of comic, we could always forward you to some forums or blogs. |
Most Mature,Gritty Comic ? I want to pick up a REALLY good mature , gritty comic book.....it could be comics or manga , doesn't matter |
I LOVE Preacher! Anything by Garth Ennis. Welcome Back Frank, from the Punisher is also great, gritty but not so much mature (no cursing) When Ennis went over to Marvel at first they didn't have an adult line, but now they do. I liked the earlier stories from the Marvel MAx line.
The Sandman is wonderful, mature in the smart artistic way.
30 days of night, is cool too with an interesting art.
Frank Miller is amazing, Sin City I think is some of his finest work.
Alan Moore can be hit or miss.
I like the classic work that really influenced other work, as you can tell.
Good Luck I hope this helps. |
Do you find any of these comics funny? WARNING: They are mature comics. Nothing nudity-wise, but very suggestive and vulgar language. 18+ please.
Be honest, me and my friend need feedback. Also note, this is not the final art-style, these are teaser comics so we can show people what our story is like kinda.
